Hey all, I'm being drawn into the Macworld and I have some questions.
Before I truly decide to take the leap and purchase a new mac...
We have an old mac laptop here with Tiger on it. Does it make sense for me to learn VO on tiger, then eventually move onto Snow Leopard?
Is there huge differences? Would I be completely learning something new in Snow Leopard, or does it just build upon vo in Tiger?
Thanks all,
Polka Dot
Loving her iPad!
tiger to snow leopard? well make the cat lose weight, paint it white with black spots,, elongate the tail, and grow the fur long and fluffy, and you got a snow leopard. *smile*
Are you being a silly Bear? Lol!
rofl, i think he is. a lot of the commands i think are somewhat similar, but VO between tiger and snow leopard is a heck of a lot more powerful and more responcive. With snow leopard it's almost like having a sighted person watching over your shoulder, explaining things to you that are on the screen as you go over them. if you want a demo of snow leopard and it's abilities and the like we could try to try and set something up as i have a snow leopard macBook as my secondary computer quickly becoming my primary.
Rat thanks. So, are you thinking, I should really learn on a snow leopard machine, not a tiger?
It would sure be interesting to hear a podcast with a windows machine and a mac machine side by side. Saying visiting a handful of websites, using iTunes, and so on.
Personally, I'm more interested in the differences in surfing the web. Is vo and mac more accessible, than using window eyes or something? Farely equa?
I am absolutely loving the iPad experience.
yes, i'd focus on a snow leopard computer if you want to learn Voiceover. having used jaws for a long time, i can say that voiceover is much much better in some regards, more power to control stuff, and one plus it has over any windows screen reader is that it works with almost everything straight out of the box, no scripts or modfying of a program needed. also, with it being built in to the OS, it is a lot harder to crash, and will instantly auto relaunch if it does crash, with no input from you.
yeah the commands and alot of stuff changed from leopard to snow leopard, so imagine the differences from tiger to snow leopard.
Yeah, it'll be a huge difference. Tiger only has the Fred speech synthesizer, but when you upgrade to Snow Leopard, or even Leopard, there's a speech synthesizer called Alex that sounds more like a human than anything else. It takes breaths in betweensentences and stuff like that. I think you'll love the voice.
i still say that tiger should lose weight and grow his tail! roarhrhrhrhrh!
Just start learning vo and osx as a hole using tiger. Sure, there are a couple of new features in sl along with the new voice, but there are several concepts that you'll want to get your head around before using vo as your main screenreader and you'll be able to masterthose perfectly fine in tiger.
Everyones describing it as if it's a completely different product. It's not. I started off learning vo under tiger and most of the stuff I learnt was still very valuable under snowleopard.
As a side note, your mac might not be able to run snow leopard anyway. It will need to have been made after mid 2006 (aka it needs to have a intel processer)
Tiger's still a lovely os, I really don't see what the push towards sl is for.
b3n, that is all good to know.
I'll definitely start practicing on Tiger. Hmmm, wonder if I still can find a guide on the web...?
Yes, if we were to upgrade to snow leopard, it would be because we bought a whole new machine. *grin*
Who knows, maybe Santa will bring one.
